For more than three decades the TYC has committed thousands of hours of community service and learned what it is to be leaders in a modern society while holding strong to their culture and language.

The Cherokee Nation Tribal Youth Council (TYC) consists of 17 seats. Tribal Youth Council members each serve a one year term. TYC members attend Tribal Council meetings to stay abreast of current issues facing the Cherokee Nation.

The Cherokee Nation Tribal Youth Council began under resolution 80-89 on October 14, 1989. Under the vision of a number of dedicated youth in cooperation with Principal Chief Wilma P. Mankiller, and the support of the Tribal Council, the TYC came to life. The TYC’s history is filled with success stories. Youth who served on the TYC now hold leadership positions within Cherokee Nation, the federal government and the private sector.

Duties

  • Agree to serve a complete one-year term

  • Attend Tribal Council meetings in person

  • Attend Tribal Youth Council meetings, plus activities, in person

  • Conduct behavior appropriate for an ambassador of the Cherokee Nation

  • Actively participate in all community service projects and peer discussions

  • Maintain acceptable academic standing

  • Adhere to deadlines and turn in all paperwork and forms in a timely manner

  • Be a positive influence in the community and among friends

  • Follow all directions of the TYC Advisor

Eligibility Requirements

  • Cherokee Nation citizen

  • Ages 15—22

  • Able to attend monthly meetings and community activities in person

  • Enrolled in a program of education (public, private or home school)

  • Enrolled students must be in good standing and passing

  • Never married or cohabitated

  • Must not have children
