Climate change and environmental degradation affect everyone, but their impacts fall especially hard on young people and future generations, who will inherit the conditions we create today. The Cherokee Nation Youth Climate Change and Environmental Protection Task Force was established by Executive Order 2024-03-CTH to gather the perspectives of Cherokee Nation youth and to craft a report that includes recommendations on climate change and environmental protection. Cherokee youth are the future caretakers of our Nation, and their voices are essential in shaping long-term environmental solutions.  

The Youth Task Force collected data from Cherokee Nation youth citizens, ages 14-24, through a survey that included questions designed to gauge participants' interest and knowledge of topic-specific issues. The data was then used to identify the primary concerns of Cherokee Nation youth citizens, which shaped the report's recommendation section. 

Recommendations developed by the Youth Task Force discussed matters relating to climate change and environmental protection, including integrating environmental education into existing youth programs and expanding access to environmental career pathways. The Cherokee Nation is committed to protecting our environment. By working together – youth, families, citizens, and communities – we can take meaningful action to address climate change and environmental challenges, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for future generations.
