The Surgical Technology Program is designed to prepare competent entry-level surgical technologists who play a crucial role as integral team members. Their responsibilities include preparing sterile supplies, equipment, and instruments, as well as assisting the surgeon in their use. The surgical technologist most frequently serves as the instrument handler, setting up instruments and passing them to the surgeon. They may also assist the surgeon by performing tasks such as retracting incisions, cutting sutures, and utilizing suction to maintain a clear field of vision for the surgeon.

The Cherokee Nation W.W. Hastings Hospital Surgical Technology Program strives to fill surgical technologist positions in our healthcare system with educated and well-trained Cherokee people. This will achieve and maintain an enriching cultural identity, economic self-reliance, and a strong healthcare system. This aligns with the Cherokee Nation's strategic objectives of strengthening community and creating jobs. As the Cherokee People say, "Ga Du Gi," or "people working together."

The Cherokee Nation Surgical Technology Program has forged a unique collaboration with the Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology. This partnership offers students the opportunity to earn an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Applied Technology, with a specialized focus on Health and Human Services.

The Cherokee Nation Surgical Technology Program is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).  Accreditation exists to establish, maintain, and promote appropriate quality standards for educational programs. These standards are used to develop, evaluate, and self-analyze the surgical technology program. Accreditation in health-related disciplines also serves a significant public interest. Along with certification, accreditation is a tool to help assure a well-prepared and qualified workforce providing health care services. Students who graduate from an accredited program are eligible to take the certification examination.
